Dr Ayesha Shahid

Assistant Professor of Law

Dr Ayesha Shahid joined Coventry Law School in 2017. She previously held academic positions at Brunel University, the University of Hull, University of Warwick, and University of Peshawar (Pakistan). She brings extensive experience in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has designed and delivered a range of innovative law modules. She currently leads the undergraduate International Human Rights Law module, and teaches Applied Law Study module and the postgraduate Law and Contemporary problems module.

Ayesha’s research and teaching interests lie in International Human Rights Law, International Law, Islamic Family Law, and Gender and the Law with a particular focus on the lived experiences of marginalised women and children and the interaction between legal norms and social justice. Her monograph, Silent Voices, Untold Stories: Women Domestic Workers and their Struggle for Empowerment,(Oxford University Press) represents a significant contribution to scholarship on gender, labour rights, and human rights in South Asia. She is also co‑editor of International Law and Islam: Historical Explorations (Brill, 2018). Her scholarship includes peer‑reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and externally funded international research projects, with support from the UKCLE, Max Planck Institute for Comparative and Private International Law, Philip Reckett Foundation, Asia Foundation and International Labour Organization. Ayesha has supervised numerous PhDs to successful completion. She has also served as external examiner for University of Sussex and School of Oriental and African Studies.

Ayesha also serves as Associate Editor of the Manchester Journal of Transnational Islamic Law and State Practice, Editor of the LUMS Law Journal, and has previously held the role of Editor‑in‑Chief of the Asian Yearbook of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law  and the Journal of Islamic State Practices in International Law.
