Hilary Marsh

Lecturer in Law

Hilary is a solicitor. She worked in the criminal justice system for 36 years in the Court Service, The Crown Prosecution Service and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMCPSI). This included research and analysis on the performance of prosecution areas across the country and the Service Prosecution Authority examining court martials, particular types of crime such as terrorism and gross negligence manslaughter. She also worked on specialist reports into specific failings in the criminal justice system such as the Peart Report into a tragic potentially avoidable killing. She served for two years on The Law Society Council, the governing body for Solicitors in England and Wales, and on the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society. During her career she held a variety of roles including project management, for which she won a Chief Constable’s Award for Excellence, manager of a Crown Court team of lawyers, case preparation and advocacy.

In 2017 Hilary retired from practice for a quieter life but soon became bored. She commenced ad hoc teaching with the University of Birmingham, University of Law and Coventry University before being appointed to the staff of Coventry on a part-time basis. This still allows time for gardening, walking, travel and sport – particularly Manchester City. Hilary is a panel member for disciplinary hearings for the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
